The Mala League
The Mala (麻辣, Chongqing spicy!) League is a rugby union 10s league that is local to Chongqing and was founded by the CQRFC Management Committee in 2013. The league was created as a way to increase awareness of rugby within the Chongqing community while also giving members of the club more opportunities to play full-contact rugby.
Since its humble beginnings The Mala League has slowly evolved and is now gearing up to go into its second season. The league currently has two solid 10s teams, The Peach Eaters and The Beaver Hunters, but will look to expand as club membership increases. Each team has a captain with 10+ years experience playing rugby, and a social captain who has an ability to down a pint of beer in under 3 seconds. The two teams will play a total of 8 monthly games throughout the 2014/2015 season, starting in September and ending in June. All players participating in The Mala League are members of The Conquerors and are split into equal teams. Outside of The Mala League they not only train together, but also play together in all club games. Don’t let this fool you though, rivalry between The Peach Eaters and The Beaver Hunters is fierce and the playing is tough. For those who want full contact, gum guards are essential. We insist on taking protective measures, to ensure the worst injury anyone gets from the Mala League is a Sunday morning hangover! Mala League game days always make for great entertainment and are an enjoyable day out for all. CQRFC sponsor, Box Bar, will be running a food stand along with a cheap bar at each Mala League game so supporters can come along and enjoy some delicious Western food and ice cold drinks as they watch the match. Each game day will be followed up with an after party at Box Bar where players celebrate yet another successful game and supporters can join in on all the fun.
